Gold price per gram: ounces, tolas and kilograms
By GoldPrice.Today · Updated · Editorial policy
The unit printed beside a gold quote is as important as the number. Use the same weight, currency and purity when comparing a small jewellery item with a bullion reference.
The four weight units used on this site
A gold ounce means a troy ounce: 31.1034768 grams. It differs from the ordinary ounce used for many household goods. A kilogram contains 1,000 grams. GoldPrice.Today uses 11.6638038 grams for one tola.
| Unit | Grams | Calculation from a gram price |
|---|---|---|
| Gram | 1 | Multiply by 1 |
| Troy ounce | 31.1034768 | Multiply by 31.1034768 |
| Tola | 11.6638038 | Multiply by 11.6638038 |
| Kilogram | 1,000 | Multiply by 1,000 |
A worked example without a current market claim
Suppose an illustrative pure-gold quote is 3,110.34768 USD per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1034768 gives 100 USD per gram. One tola is then about 1,166.38 USD and one kilogram is 100,000 USD. These deliberately chosen numbers explain the arithmetic; they are not today’s price.
If one USD buys 2 units of a hypothetical local currency, the reference becomes 200 local units per gram. For ten grams of 18K gold, a 75% purity factor gives 200 × 10 × 0.75 = 1,500 local units of estimated gold content value.
Avoid common comparison mistakes
- Confirm whether an ounce quote uses troy ounces.
- Check whether the price is per gram or for the entire item.
- Separate the weight of gold from stones and other non-gold parts.
- Use the actual purity or fineness where available.
- Ask which fees and taxes are included in a seller’s total.
