What moves gold prices and local currency rates?
By GoldPrice.Today · Updated · Editorial policy
A gold price change needs context. The international reference, the currency conversion and the price of a finished product are separate parts of the comparison.
Separate the USD reference from the exchange rate
On this site, a local ounce estimate equals the USD ounce reference multiplied by the number of local currency units per USD. This arithmetic explains why two currencies can show different percentage changes for the same underlying gold reference.
In an illustrative example, the USD gold reference rises by 2% and the local currency units per USD rise by 3%. The converted value rises by 1.02 × 1.03 − 1 = 5.06%, rather than exactly 5%. If the exchange rate moves the other way, it can partly offset the gold move.
Read market explanations with care
Market commentary often discusses interest rates, inflation expectations, currency movements, demand, supply and geopolitical events. A plausible explanation is not proof that a single factor caused a price move, or that the same relationship will hold next time.
Distinguish an observed change from a forecast about its continuation. Check the time period, quote source and currency before comparing a news headline with a daily chart.
Retail charges are a separate layer
A shop quote can change because of its premium, stock availability, making charges or other transaction costs even when the reference barely moves. The converted reference shown on a country page cannot measure those seller-specific differences.
For a like-for-like comparison, hold weight and purity constant, compare the same quote type, and record the timestamp. Do not treat a change in an item’s total price as a pure change in the gold market.
Use the data that matches your question
Use a rate snapshot for an indicative current conversion, stored daily observations for historical context and the statistical forecast for a model scenario. These three outputs are built differently and can have different freshness. The methodology page explains their limitations.
